Empire State Building honors China in lights

Ceremony celebrating nation’s 60 years of communism riles critics

NEW YORK – Red and yellow lights shone from the top of the Empire State Building at dusk Wednesday, a tribute to communist China’s 60th anniversary that protesters labeled “blatant approval” of totalitarianism and criticized as inappropriate for an icon in the land of the free.

The building is routinely lit with different to mark holidays and big events, but opponents questioned whether it’s right to commemorate a sensitive political issue, particularly when China has such a poor human rights record.

About 20 supporters of Tibet, which China has ruled since shortly after communists took over in 1949, protested outside the building during a ceremonial lighting of a scale model inside the lobby. They chanted “No to China’s empire; free Tibet now,” and held signs reading, “Empire State Building celebrating 60 years of China’s oppression.”

‘Honored and delighted’
At the lobby ceremony, building manager Joseph Bellina called the lights a high honor and said he was proud of the relationship between “our countries and our people.”

Honored?  Freedom is what got you your education to have your fancy job that freedom gave you.  Oppression is what will take it away.  And you feel honored to support oppressive governments?  Hmph!

Chinese Consul General Peng Keyu, who pulled the switch on the glass-encased model, said he was “honored and delighted.”

He said China’s reforms of the past 30 years have led to greater openness and “tremendous change.”

Keyu and Bellina didn’t address critics and declined to answer questions.

Journalist and blogger Marc Masferrer questioned legitimizing a government that continues to repress its citizens’ freedoms, including their access to media and the Internet.

Masferrer pointed out that this year is also the 20th anniversary of the violently crushed student-led movement in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. The People’s Liberation Army is believed to have killed hundreds, possibly thousands, of protesters.

Getting Ready to go to Mackinac Island!

Just a quick stop in to update my readers. Finally finished ALL my garments! YAY! There has been sooo much I have been wanting to share with y’all. Just been too busy. Couldn’t hold in my opinions, so my poor cats had to listen to me complaining.

Anyhoo, I will have full recaps of happenings on the island. I will let y’all know of the candidates for ‘10. I may be able to sneak onto a computer at the internet cafe on the island. Perhaps, perhaps, there may be some endorsements coming up. I am getting ready to hop on the ferry.

So, enjoy some Rockabilly Before Midnite. I think the perfect song for this moment is “Ghost Ship” by the German group Black Raven, since I will soon be on a ferry across the Mysterious Great Lakes, where many ghost ships lie below the waters.

Haven’t posted Rockabilly After Midnite for a while.  Hemming my skirt, this song just popped in my head.  No reason.  Hey it’s better than voices in my head.  Anyhoo, this is one of those songs that just touches my heart and makes me desire to reach out to something, never knowing what that is, but it’s there – somewhere out there.

John Edwards is such a Cad

Ex-aide says Edwards fathered mistress’ child

Senator also allegedly asked campaign finance chair to hide paternity

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A man who once claimed to have fathered the child of John Edwards’ mistress says in a book proposal the former presidential candidate is the real father and that he and Edwards worked with his campaign finance chairman to hide that secret, according to a newspaper report published online Saturday.

The New York Times said the book proposal by former Edwards aide Andrew Young states he helped facilitate the affair between Edwards and Rielle Hunter. According to the newspaper, Young wrote that Edwards once told Hunter they would wed after Edwards’ wife, who has cancer, died.

What a gentleman…

Edwards told Hunter that the ceremony would be held on a rooftop in New York and the Dave Matthews Bands would make an appearance, the newspaper said, citing its examination of the book proposal.

Again,  what is with these poli-critters just being plain old awkward when dealing with affairs?

Edwards has said the affair with Hunter ended in 2006. That year, Edwards’ political action committee paid Hunter’s video production firm $100,000 for work. Then the committee paid another $14,086 on April 1, 2007. The Edwards camp has said the latter payment from the PAC was exchanged for 100 hours of unused videotape Hunter shot.

The same day, the Edwards presidential campaign had injected $14,034.61 into the PAC for a “furniture purchase,” according to federal election records.

Bill Schuette Launches Campaign to be Michigan’s Attorney General

At news conferences across Michigan on Monday, Sept. 21 and Tuesday, Sept. 22, Bill Schuette will announce his candidacy for Attorney General of Michigan. “Our state needs an Attorney General who will put safety first and do what it takes to protect Michigan families,” Schuette said. “I will and that’s why I’m running.”

Campaign events on Monday will take place at:

8:30 a.m. – In Midland at the Midland County Courthouse, located at 220 W. Ellsworth Street (NOTE: Please enter the courthouse from the back).

11 a.m. - In Southfield at the Southfield Public Library Auditorium, located at 26300 Evergreen.

1 p.m. - In Lansing at the Radisson Hotel, located at 111 N. Grand Ave.

3 p.m. – In Grand Rapids at the Kent County Republican Party Headquarters, located at 264 Leonard Street, NW.

19% PetPlace.com Readers Think That Pets Should be Allowed to Sue Owners

I subscribe to a Cat newsletter called PetPlace.com. A few days ago I received an email for a poll asking people if they think pets have the right to sue. Today I received the results of the poll.

Earlier this week, we asked you this question: Should pets be able to sue their owners? If you haven’t already done so – take our poll.

This is an interesting question.

This topic came up as a result of Senate confirmation of Cass Sunstein as administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. Many were reluctant to approve Sunstein, concerned that he would push a radical animal rights agenda. In a 2002 academic paper for Harvard University, Sunstein drew a parallel between current uses of animals and human slavery, even going as far as to suggest that animals could be granted the right to sue humans in court.

It’s a controversial issue. Should animals have the right to sue their owners?

Here is what you think:

36% – Animals should not be allowed to sue and whoever came up with the idea is stupid

24% – I think it is a ploy for lawyers to make more money

I checked some of the comments, I swear some people are so stupid. I am not sure how these people even have half the brains to even do basic things as feed and take care of their pets. Fortunately, the majority does have common sense.

PetPlace.com is not some militant animal rights website. It is mainly a site for pet owners to learn about critter related issues. Like why your cat or dog may do silly things, how to detect symptoms of certain pet related diseases, how to know when your pet needs to go to the vet versus something that can be waited out, what the best foods are for certain conditions, what people foods are safe for pets and what is bad for animals. So if 19% of PetPlace.com readers think that pets should sue, imagine what subscribers to PETA think?

I am dedicating tonite’s Rockabilly After Midnite to my fellow bloggers.  We conservatives need to keep herding in our poli-critters.  They have gotten way far off the trail.  Now it’s time for the bloggers and Glenn Beck to take on our lassos and rope in the strays.  We need to show the poli-critters that us cowboys and cowgirls are BOSS! 

Don’t try to understand the politicians.  They are like cows.  They have no sense of direction or moral compasses.  The cowpokes need to give them the occasional poking.  They need to fear “We the people.”  But they can’t fear us if we are not speaking out and telling them what we want them to do.  In fact they will wander off, cause stampedes and ruin towns of hard working Americans.

Ron Paul’s Money Machine Churns for Others

The 2008 presidential campaign may be over, but the “revolution” spawned by Rep. Ron Paul’s candidacy continues to echo through the political world.

Paul (R-Tex.), capitalizing on a healthy distrust of government and his strident opposition to the war in Iraq, became an Internet phenomenon—using the Web to raise an astounding $35 million for his long-shot candidacy.

The financial network Paul built during his campaign has, amazingly, continued to reap dividends for two men seeking to be the congressman’s political heirs in the 2010 elections.

Rand Paul, who is running for the Senate in Kentucky and is the son of the congressman, has already raised $827,000, even though nearly the entire Republican Party establishment in the Bluegrass State has lined up behind Secretary of State Trey Grayson.

Peter Schiff, an economic adviser to Paul’s presidential campaign and a likely senatorial candidate in Connecticut, has raised more than $1 million, although he has yet to officially declare.

Both men have used the “money bomb” approach (encourage all donors to give on a certain day to post large 24-hour totals) to fundraising strategies that Paul pioneered.

North & South Book 2 – Orry Rescues Madeline

To honor Patrick Swayze’s memory, I am going to do something a bit different for Rockabilly After Midnite and play one of my most fave scenes from North and South.

I tried to post a music scene from Dirty Dancing, but frankly I couldn’t find anything too good. Let’s be honest, Patrick Swayze was hot in the movie and was a good actor, other than that the movie didn’t have much going for it.  Most of the music was either crappy or ho-hum.

Update on Fake MIRepublican.com Email

Last nite I had posted about a fake email from a fake site posing as being from the MI Republican Party, which was not. I received this email from someone “in the know” in the Michigan Republican Party. I was asked to not reveal who gave me the info, but I will copy/paste from the email;

The dems did not somehow get a hold of the registration list as the party response claims. It’s offensive and insulting to our intelligence that they suggested that.

There is an individual who is a well-known for pulling this kind of stunt, that works for a gubernatorial candidate. That alone is not news. Other than there may be legal problems this time with how they did it.

The news is how one campaign obviously got registration emails and the others (hoekstra, cox, bouchard) did not. Perhaps those in charge of the list need to be asked how emails got to that camapign?

Less Than Two Weeks to Mackinac!

As y’all know I will be attending the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference, on Sept 25 and 26.  Y’all also know I have been making outfits to wear.  I had stated a few weeks ago that I had to put off my sewing, because I needed to lose a few inches to look cute in my clothes.  Well, I haven’t lost any inches.  Damn, I miss being 24, when I could eat an entire large stuff crust Pizza Hut pizza and stay a size 6.  Yeah, well I gave in and ordered a girdle.  Sad ain’t it?

So now I will be playing in the sewing room at break neck speed, finishing my outfits.  I am awaiting 3 yards of lace trim to hem my fuchsia leopard print pencil skirt with.  Just finished a sleeveless black top to wear with the skirt.  Now I am working on a collarless Mad Men inspired blazer to wear over the outfit.  If I have time, I will make a blue tweed (same) blazer to match with a blue tweed pencil skirt I made a few months ago.

I will try to check in and possibly make quick posts.  Look for Rockabilly After Midnite posts still, where I will express some of my thoughts on current events.  ‘Til then, see ya on the island!

Patrick Swayze Passes Away

OMG!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers’ hearts with “Dirty Dancing” and then broke them with “Ghost,” died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting “The Beast,” an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making “The Beast” because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was “considerably more optimistic” than that.

“I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking,” Swayze told ABC’s Barbara Walters in early 2009. “Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better get a fire under it.”

A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in “Dirty Dancing.” As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, he seemed a natural to play the role.

A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Grey as an idealistic young woman on vacation with her family and Swayze as the Catskills resort’s sexy (and much older) dance instructor, the film made great use of both his grace on his feet and his muscular physique.

It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning hit song in “(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life,” stage productions and a sequel, 2004’s “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights,” in which he made a cameo.

Swayze performed and co-wrote a song on the soundtrack, the ballad “She’s Like the Wind,” inspired by his wife, Lisa Niemi. The film also gave him the chance to utter the now-classic line, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

And it allowed him to poke fun at himself on a “Saturday Night Live” episode, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent — and frighteningly shirtless — Chris Farley.

A major crowdpleaser, the film drew only mixed reviews from critics, though Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times, “Given the limitations of his role, that of a poor but handsome sex-object abused by the rich women at Kellerman’s Mountain House, Mr. Swayze is also good. … He’s at his best — as is the movie — when he’s dancing.”

Swayze followed that up with the 1989 action flick “Road House,” in which he played a bouncer at a rowdy bar. But it was his performance in 1990’s “Ghost” that showed his vulnerable, sensitive side. He starred as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee (Demi Moore) — with great frustration and longing — through a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Swayze said at the time that he fought for the role of Sam Wheat (director Jerry Zucker wanted Kevin Kline) but once he went in for an audition and read six scenes, he got it.

Why did he want the part so badly? “It made me cry four or five times,” he said of Bruce Joel Rubin’s Oscar-winning script in an AP interview.

“Ghost” provided yet another indelible musical moment: Swayze and Moore sensually molding pottery together to the strains of the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” It also earned a best-picture nomination and a supporting-actress Oscar for Goldberg, who said she wouldn’t have won if it weren’t for Swayze.

“When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick,” Goldberg said in March 2008 on the ABC daytime talk show “The View.”

Swayze himself earned three Golden Globe nominations, for “Dirty Dancing,” ”Ghost” and 1995’s “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” which further allowed him to toy with his masculine image. The role called for him to play a drag queen on a cross-country road trip alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo.

His heartthrob status almost kept him from being considered for the role of Vida Boheme.

My heart goes out to Mr. Swayze’s family.

It seems that this year so many people from my generation and/or well known to my generation are passing on.  I gotta stop thinking.  Just the other day I was thinking about “Orrie Main” (Patrick Swayze’s character from North and South).  That was when my crush on Patrick Swayze started.  Just like I had had a passing thought about Michael Jackson just before his passing.  Walter Cronkrite.  Was reminiscing about Pretty in Pink just before John Hughes passed on.

I found the email mentioned, but did not open it. When I have tons of emails I always look who all of them are from and the subject and open first according to importance. I noticed the above sender, as was mentioned in the official Republican email, and did not recognize that sender from previous MIGOP emailings. Saw the subject as some sort of survey. Didn’t open it. Then I found the one that I recognized as official.

Earlier today I received a call, allegedly from the Michelle McManus’ “campaign.” The caller asked me who I plan on voting for in the gubernatorial straw poll. Didn’t talk to them too long. Told them wasn’t sure who I was voting for. The caller claimed that Michelle McManus is running in the primary. I haven’t heard that yet.

Hmmm. If the caller is from the same as the emailer and could be from the Democrat Party, as the actual Republican emailing claims, how did the Democrat Party get info that I am going to the island? Plus, how did they get a hold of my email? I don’t like this.
