A Worthy Woman Detroit and Michigan Can be Proud of

Some of you may have a heard about the Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty text messages. You may have heard that Wayne County Prosecuter Kym Worthy brought perjury charges against the two of them. This all started with a whistle blower trial in which officers from the Detroit Police Department lost their jobs for tagging the mayor to see if Kwame and Christine were having an affair on tax payer dollars. List of charges here. Statements from Miss Worthy’s Monday press conference can be found here.
The subject of this post is not necessarily about Kwame Kilpatrick, nor Christine Beatty. The subject about this post is Kym Worthy and women in general. I admit, I don’t know too much about Miss Worthy. But from what I could tell, when I saw her announce the eight charges on TV she seems like an awesome strong willed woman who believes in truth and honesty. I could tell she means what she says. Don’t just take my word for it, in a Freep.com article titled “Worthy known for tackling tough cases” says about her, “The job of prosecutor is perhaps as tailor-made for Kym L. Worthy as the suits she wears.” The article quotes her pastor having nothing but praise for her.
That kind of straightforward thinking is characteristic of Worthy, said her friend and pastor the Rev. Charles Ellis III.
“What I saw today was a strong elected official doing her job,” said Ellis, pastor of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit. “The Kym Worthy I know has always been a strong shooter. She’s always been no nonsense. She’s on the side of truth; the side of right as she sees it.
“And just like she said, she’s unbought and unbossed.”
The article says that she graduated from Notre Dame Law School and always wanted to be an attorney she was a child. The article talks about her passion for law and justice. As someone who graduated from the School of Hard Knocks with a degree in Street Smarts, sometimes I make fun of people going to big fancy schools. But all in all, I think she is a woman to be admired. She is someone that young women should admire and aspire to look up to.
With all this Kwame and Eliot Spitzer talk, Americans love a good ‘ol Scarlett letter story. We all get obsessed with finding information about the adulterers and their girlfriends. We like to talk about the wife and give our opinions about what we would do in her position. If y’all recall after the Spitzer incident people were checking out Ashley Dupre’s MySpace page. I admit I checked it out too. But I did that for a post about her. I noticed that there were young ladies who wrote in her comments encouraging her. These young ladies were thanking her for adding them as her friend. They had just become friends with her after the Spitzer incident came out. Never knew her before that.
If young women want to find someone on MySpace they only heard about in the news, Kym Worthy is the woman they should befriend on MySpace. While I highly doubt she has a MySpace page, she is someone that young women should look up to and aspire to be like. Not these skanks like Ashley Dupre. The difference between Miss Worthy and Ashley is that Miss Worthy worked her way to where she is. While Ashley got her notoriety from doing bad stuff.
I have heard that this whole Kwame mess is not good for Detroit or Michigan PR, on the national front. But I think Kym Worthy is the silver lining in the cloud. If women want to emulate other women they see in media and society, they should emulate women like Kym Worthy, Laura Bush, Condi Rice, Kay Bailey Hutchison or Ann Richards. I know, I know, Ann Richards was a Democrat. But ya can’t help but admire her spunk.
There is somewhat of a thought that talking about women’s issues is somehow a Democrat thing. But I disagree. With the women I mentioned above, they have shown that a woman can be strong and feminine at the same time. It does not matter if a woman is a homemaker or has a job outside of the home. Talking about women’s issues is not stomping around at a parade saying, “look at me, give me special rights.” What is important is that she is the best she can be.

Maybe.
As far as I can tell she’s done nothing in this case that any reasonably competent and politically ambitious prosecutor would do. But that doesn’t mean she’s not virtuous as well. It just doesn’t mean that she necessarily is so.
It would be nice to have a bit of hero story in the midst of the squalor. I’ll keep my mind open, but with politicians the burden of proof is on them.

Oops - I meant “she’s done nothing in this case that any reasonably competent and politically ambitious prosecutor WOULDN’T do.” IOW, she’s at par.

I agree with ya that most prosecuters in her position would do the same thing. I was mainly trying to get a “Public Service Announcement” out. I am getting tired of the way society and the media in general are portraying women. I thought it would be a nice way of telling young women that there are more options out there for them. Even if they do choose to be married, they don’t have to act like a bimbo wife. Laura Bush is a great example of that.
I suppose if it had been “Ken Worthy.” I probably would not have devoted a post to what a great man the ficticious Ken is. When scandals break men recieve less scrutiny and the men doing the cheating don’t become instant celebs. When they do, young men don’t look up to them.
