“In your guts, you know (s)he’s nuts” – Lyndon Johnson

The Republicans and Alleged Conservatives Need to Drop Stereotypes and Attitudes About Single Women

I had heard that 6 out of 10 women voted for Barack Obama. I wondered how many of them were unmarried. I did a little search on Women’s Voice. Women Vote. I found this article, originally from WorldNetDaily, that talks about unmarried women put Obama over the top.

“Soccer moms” – suburban married women with young children – have drawn the attention of campaign strategists over the past decade, but an exit poll of voters showed single women were a decisive factor in Barack Obama’s historic victory.

“If not for the overwhelming support of unmarried women, John McCain would have won the women’s vote and with it, the White House,” said the international research firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner.

I did not support Barack Obama. I did not want to see him become president. But I do have one thing to say regarding this, “Ha, ha, ha.” I will get into why I say this, after my commentary.

Tuesday night, unmarried women supported the Democratic candidate by a stunning 70 to 29 percent margin, the firm said in a summary of its calculations, based on the Edison/Mitofsky National Election Pool published by CNN.

By contrast, married women supported Obama by a 50 to 47 percent margin.

Obama’s backing from unmarried women exceeds the support he generated among both younger voters and Hispanic voters, according to Greenberg Quinlan Rosner.

Similarly, unmarried women supported Democratic House candidates by a 64 to 29 percent margin.

The research firm found a 44-point difference in the voting behavior of married women and unmarried women.

The support for the Democratic candidate by unmarried women was significantly higher Tuesday night than previous presidential elections.

[....]

The article talks about how unmarried women have been supporting Democrats since at least back to Bill Clinton. But Barack saw a higher a number of single women support than previous Democrat presidential candidates.

The article also calls unmarried women the fastest growing demographic.

I decided to click on the link to the original article at WorldNetDaily. After reading the article, there was a link to a poll on WND. Oh, I swear I was about to punch my fist through the computer. I thought the poll questions were going to be serious. And I would be able to mark the one I thought was the most relevant reason for the high support of single women for Obama. No, they were stupid stereotypes. I wish I could say that the majority of questions were serious and common sense, but alas, they were ASININE. Here are just a few of those moronic statements. And my reactions to how I was thinking after reading each question.

Unmarried women … and ‘gays’ … and people of color … and the majority of U.S. voters. Your point?

OK, so they are putting unmarried women and blacks in the same category as gays? WTF!

They voted for Obama because they didn’t have domineering, conservative husbands telling them what to do

Yes, that’s the way single women think of marriage. (sarcasm)

These women are the ones with the highest stake in preserving Roe v. Wade

That’s the biggest issue on the minds of single women. (sarcasm)

You can’t get inside people’s heads — just because a woman’s unmarried doesn’t mean she voted for Obama

I actually like this one.

Government is the natural safety net for unmarried women — it’s understandable

That shore is right. I dun depend on deh gubmint to take care of me. (sarcasm)

For this demographic and others, John McCain was simply the wrong candidate to have on the Republican ticket

Duh, what have I been saying this whole election?

That hot photo of Obama in his swim trunks apparently worked its magic

Yup, similar reason I voted for Bob Barr. Oh baby, that salt & pepper hair, thin mustache and authoritative look. Mmmm, just makes me hot thinking about him. (sarcasm)

I don’t know how Michelle Obama sleeps at night

Wasn’t Barack’s campaign theme, “Vote Obama, sleep with Obama!”? (sarcasm)

If Sarah Palin had been pro-choice, these same women would have voted for the GOP

After all, single women are promiscuous and use abortion as another form of birth control. (sarcasm)

Clearly, something about marriage makes women more conservative

Could it be perhaps that how a person is raised depends on whether or not they are conservative?

Do men change political views after marriage?

Women are naturally more emotional than men, and Obama’s appeal was entirely emotional

Well then why are the statistics not showing more married women having voted for Obama? I would think married women are more emotional than single women

Now that the election is over, the blogosphere, conservative publications and pundits have been talking about how the Republican Party needs to regroup and go back to it’s conservative principles. Some are talking about how to bring the so-cons, fis-cons and security conservatives together. Until the Republican Party and the so-cons can get rid of stereotypes that single women’s biggest concern is pro-choice, they will never attract in single women to the cause. I am going to once again quote Bill Clinton, “It’s the economy stupid!!!!”. The Republican Party severely failed in projecting a fiscal message to single women.

Single women saw only social issues being projected by the party. I am not saying that single women don’t care about social issues, but they have more pressing issues on their minds. As for myself, I prefer to separate social issues with political issues. If I had things my way, social issues would be associated with the Republican Party as is wind surfing or football. Single women are the only ones in their households who pay the bills, buy groceries and clothes. If only the Republican Party had reached out to single women and talked about things like lower taxes and reduce gubmint spending, they would have won us over.

The single women who do not follow politics as much as I, see the Republicans yammering about social issues and not hear the Democrats yammering about social issues automatically think that the Democrats are concerned with fiscal issues, which they are not. That is why my only choice in the election was Libertarian. The Libertarians main talking point was that in order to lower taxes, gubmint needs to reduce spending. If gubmint doesn’t get rid of spending, taxes can’t be lowered. Someone would have to pay for spending.

I have been involved in grassroots Republicanism. I have felt lonely being the only single woman Republican. I have talked to leadership within the First District GOP, regarding recruiting single women. Everyone thinks I am dumb and stupid and don’t take me serious. I have even been told that single women can’t be recruited, because of the abortion issue. That is so freakin clueless. Single women don’t care as much about this as they say. We are most worried about getting food on the table, a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs, without gubmint handouts. I am eligible for just about every little hand out program that gubmint offers. But I was raised to work for what you need and want.

Speaking about grassroots Republicanism. I have always gotten the feeling that some people think the reason I am involved in politics is to find some stupid man. Pish-posh. If I go to some event and talk to someone, just simply say something along the lines of, “Hey how are you?”, to some dude, they get all weirded out and edgy. “uh, uh fine.” “Great meeting, huh?” “Uh, uh yeah.” They get all fidgety. “(Such and such person) had alot of great things to say?” “Uh, uh yeah.” Then just walk away. Last couple of Michigan Republican State Conventions I attended, I met some married jerks who assumed that because I am unmarried, I must be easy. One guy even called me a jerk for not wanting to sleep with him. If this were at a Democrat or Libertarian convention, I would not care. But it really irks me that Republicans act like the whole party is perfect and family values and don’t do anything bad. If there is anything I hate, it is hypocrites. A married Democrat or Libertarian who hits on a woman is not a hypocrite. Personal Note: Thank you FE (You know who you are) for calming me down.

And one more thing. This backstabbing of Sarah Palin, by some former members of the McCain campaign, really does not help to recruit single women. Or any women for that matter. But single women are already suspicious of Republicans.

Again, one more thing, if I was Condoleeza Rice and I read that stupid questions on the WND poll, I would be so ticked off at them, her being a single woman. I would really like to see her given some sort of prominent role within the party on the national stage. If someone within the party can draw in single women, it is her.

I think that is enough babbling, for now ;) .
