Get to know the Flint mayoral candidates

Read about the six Flint mayoral hopefuls and the big plans they have for the city.

This post accompanies “Flint mayoral hopefuls face tough sell.”

Candidates are;

Darryl Buchanan

Doesn’t seem like he has too many ideas, if any. In the profile of Mr. Buchanan is this;

In the 1970s, Buchanan joined Citizens United for Progress, a political action group. He said the late former Councilman Chester Simmons and the late Floyd McCree, the city’s first black mayor, inspired him.

There is no explanation of what Citizens United for Progress is or stands for. Come on Flint Journal, if you are going to mention a cause that a candidate is a part of at least add in another sentence or two to let your readers know what is up. People of Flint, it is up to you to find out as much as you can about someone who may be your next mayor. As of this posting I have no idea what the group is. I am on the search for that.

Brenda Clack*

Not much to see here. Keep moving.

Greg Eason

Now this guy seems like a breath of fresh air. This first sentence caught my eye;

As a longtime businessman in the community, Eason said he has seen a deficiency in Flint’s leadership.

And this;

Eason, running as an political outsider, said he’s fed up with the same recycled names and faces campaigning for public office.

Oh what the heck, I’ll just add most of the rest;

He said it hasn’t worked for the last 30 years, so people shouldn’t expect it to work now. “You can’t keep turning to the same people time and time again and expect a different outcome,” said Eason, 53, who owns a consulting business.

Eason said he has executed business plans, operated companies and completed restructurings. He pointed out that the city’s master plan hasn’t been updated for decades.

“Their comfort zone is politics, so they don’t understand what to do with a master plan because they’ve never done any strategic planning,” Eason said.

Him and his wife also adopted his young nephews after a drug overdose took the life of his sister.

Eric Mays

He didn’t seem to bad, until I read this;

Mays was endorsed by Williamson, and he’s using the same South Saginaw Street headquarters that housed Williamson’s campaign.

Williamson as in former Flint mayor Don Williamson, who resigned in February. May as well be endorsed by Don Corleon.

Sheldon Neeley

Not much to see. Keep on moving.

Dayne Walling

Sounds like a fair choice. Such as;

“It was frustrating to watch the same old problems come up over and over again,” Walling said of Williamson’s time in office.

Walling, 35, said he has a strong desire to improve Flint, including some ideas to streamline local government and attract new business.

  1. Thanks for offering insight on the candidates. Problem is that it seems like too many people are more interested in personality than in qualifications.

    Keep up the good work.

  2. You spelled Brenda Clack’s name wrong. Also, the fact that the only comment is “Not too much to see here. keep moving” speaks volumes about your bias against Clack and Neely. I think if you are going to put out information, you should at least make sure you spell people’s names correctly and attempt to appear to be unbiased, even if you are.

    That said, let’s hope it’s out with the old and in with the new – Dayne Walling as the next mayor.

  3. Kay,

    I appreciate your input. But the purpose of a blog, or most blogs, is to find news stories, post them, give links to the original article, and state the opinion of the blog owner. From there, readers can comment their thoughts, whether they agree or not.
