I’m a Betty!
OK, I am really going low here. Anyways, I was reading in Double X, a woman’s based blog that is an offshoot of Slate Magazine, a
bout Jackie Kennedy nude photos. The article took me to a Sept 2, 2008 post in Jezebel about an episode of Mad Men in which they had an ad campaign about whether women chose to be Marilyn (Monroe) or Jackie (Kennedy). I will let Jezebel explain;
Sunday night’s episode of Mad Men tackled the subject of societal expectations and perceptions of women — image (sex appeal) vs. purpose (caretaking) — when Sterling Cooper was told to rev up its Playtex bra campaign to compete with the much sexier ads run by Maidenform. The boys club at the agency decided that women want to be what men want them to be, but even the men weren’t sure exactly that was: Pete went on to cheat on his wife with a bra model and Don ended up getting pissed at his wife for buying a bikini. The whole virgin/whore thing? Not much has changed since 1962 in that respect. Clip above.
I have heard of the Mad Men show. I don’t know too much about it. On AMC Sunday nights. Takes place during the early sixties. Stiff rich people. I heard it’s a pretty good show. Might start watching. Funny, according to reactions from Facebook and conservative blogs, just like with Leave it to Beaver conservatives act as though this is how mid-century life was really like.
I think the writer at Jezebel has a point on “The whole virgin/whore thing?.” Men have always been confused about what type of woman they want. When they have the good girl, they want the bad girl. When they have the bad girl, they want the good girl. How many of us good girls have had to deal with guys talking about how mean his ex treated him, but he “misses her”. Disappeared into the wild blue yonder. Out of the blue calls up whining that the reason he was MIA is that he got back with the ex or some other bad girl. She treated him bad, now he realizes how freakin great you are cause you were so great to him. Now he wants to git back with you. If you are a smart gal, you slam the door in his face or slam the phone down.
Back to subject at hand, I am neither Marilyn nor Jackie. I am more of a Betty, as in Betty Page. Both Marilyn and Jackie were bimbos in their own rights. Marilyn was a bimbo in more the classical way. “Tee-hee, I’m just a silly girl sleeping with all of Hollywood.” Jackie was more of bimbo in that she didn’t seem to have her own personality. Just followed around her husband, looking at him lovingly.
Now Betty Page, that’s a different story. A spunky kinda gal. Moved to the beat of her own drum. Granted I am only judging by her pin-up photos. Unlike with modern pin-ups posers, her poses were quite risque yet not skanky and manipulative looking. She managed that sweet and spicy balance just right and was full of spunk. Now that’s me. Especially the whips.
I’d like to think this blog is like that. Me taking a whip to poli-critters. Take that. You bad, bad, politician! You’re a bad, bad politician. Somebody needs a spanking. Oh, sorry, I’m just having too much fun.
Umm yeah, I better get back to serious stuff soon enough.
