Where Politics and Rockabilly Become Strangely Fused

“You Make It, They Take It” 1958 Rockabilly song about income taxes

Since this 51 year old song is so true to now, plus it just has a really cool beat, I am making this former Rockabilly After Midnite a page.
Sorry I have not posted Rockabilly After Midnite for a couple days. But this here classic that I am posting more than makes up for the wait. This song is if it were written just this year and/or by someone at the Tea Parties. Many of y’all may be able to guess from the title that it has to do with income tax. No joke, it was recorded in 1958. Oddly it is an unissued recording. Gee, wonder why? Considering that this was the era in which the dress wearing J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI had files on the likes of Elvis, Buddy Holly (He married a Hispanic woman [inter-racial] marriage), Frank Sinatra (Mafia friends) , Richie Valens (Hispanic), Little Richard (Black Bi-sexual) and many others. Could the gubmint have something to do with it being unreleased? I guess Jerry Reed is a Domestic Terrorist, by modern standards. Ah, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Bonus! Black Cat Rockabilly has the lyrics.

YOU MAKE IT, THEY TAKE IT
(Jerry Reed)
JERRY REED (CAPITOL Unissued, 1958)

Income tax man’s a-knockin’ at my door
And yellin’ money, money (money-money-money)
Income tax man’s a-yellin’ for some more
Money, money (money-money-money)

[Chorus]
‘Cause when you make it they take it (money-money-money)
You make it they take it (money-money-money)
You make it they ta-a-a-ke it, they take it (money-money-money)
You make it they take it (money-money-money)
You make it they take it (money-money-money)

I was so happy just the other day
The boss man he give me a raise in my pay
But the income tax man come and a took his part
And I didn’t have no more than I did from the start
So, I worked like a slave the whole day long
Tryin’ to make enough to keep a-livin’ on
But I found that I’m lucky if I make a cent
After tax comes out for the government

[Chorus]

Years went by and my hair turned grey
I knew it wasn’t long before this boy passed away
So, I went to the cemetery, bought me a lot
And I had to pay tax on the lot I got
Now, to me that’s ashame and a sad disgrace
That a man ‘ll pay tax on his resting place
‘Cause you don’t live but once, so I don’t see why
You gotta pay tax before you lay down and die

Oh so true! Again, the more things change…
